There’s no falling asleep with Mo•Louie’s new single ‘Awake’. The single follows the release of

‘Body’ which saw the Melbourne producer and singer nominated as a semi-finalist for the International Songwriting Competition. With ‘Awake’ originally written 4 years ago with Phoebe Gunson (Your Girl Pho) and Ven X (Dirty Versachi), a few years later Mo•Louie picked the track back up and revived it, adding new instrumentation by Moses Carr with additional production and mixing by Mo herself.

Known for her music and live shows having cinematic elements whilst still living in a pop-electronic world, ‘Awake’ is no exception to the theatrics, with its anthemic and intricate vocals woven on top of lush bed of sound. The powerful song has a relatable message and deeper meaning to the artist’s own personal struggles.

“The message is something I think everyone can relate to, and that is having an overthinking mind so much so that you cannot sleep. For me personally, I have an extremely overthinking mind that keeps me awake a lot. It can be anything from planning an artistic project or me catastrophizing a situation that happened that day, all these thoughts surface at night for me. On a deeper level, I had a major depressive episode (psychosis) where I suffered from severe sleep deprivation and started hallucinating. I felt like I was living in a dark, scary, fantasy world and that time in my life was extremely frightening. I wanted to reclaim that experience and turn it into art, that is why the artwork and the press shots for this release are really dark and moody as I wanted to reflect that.”

To aid in bringing ‘Awake’ to life, Mo•Louie worked with incredible photographer Laura Du Vé. Mo had the idea of doing a Victorian inspired shoot which saw Mo donned in garments by local designers Anna Cordell and Ange Wilkins, bringing a modern twist to the look, all of which you can see in the visualiser accompanying the single.

To celebrate the release of the single Mo•Louie will be playing an intimate show at Long Play on May 20th where she will re-create the visualiser for a live setting.
